Little Family Artist, Mattie Brown
Mattie paints on thick paper and names her paintings.
Mattie Brown is one of Howard Finster's beloved great-grand
children. Her mother, Heather worked at Howard Finster's Gallery when Mattie was
born. She raised her around Howard and Paradise Gardens. Mattie took a marker
and scribbled on some of Howard's art in the Gallery when she began to walk. We
grabbed some paper for her. Then she started writing on the sales tickets. As
she grew, Mattie painted at all the recycled art projects at Paradise Gardens
and even put her handprints on the wall outside of the gallery. We just could
not remove them so they are still there. She has always liked to draw and paint
when ever given the opportunity. In the third grade at age eight years old
Mattie did a water color (above photo) so beautiful that we had to frame it and
keep it in her room at her Nana, Beverly's and Papaw Danny's house. Beverly is
teaching Mattie how to mix her own colors for her creations to save paint. She
is also teaching Mattie the math and sells of being in business as an Artist. We
try not to give her too many ideas, just the basics to get started because we
want her to paint from her heart and enjoy what she creates. With no music
lessons, Mattie also likes to play beautiful tunes on the piano, and she would
like a guitar for Christmas. She loves to ride a horse for hours and can ride
better than some adults. She paints her on vision of what a horse looks like and
people. If you would like for Mattie to paint from a photo of your own pet,
friend, or relative, then she can do it in her own imaginative vision like her
great-grandfather. Mattie is currently painting other pieces that we can frame
to sell for her. We are also selling some of her original drawings and prints
for as low as $1.00. She will paint about three pieces in a day and then we
encourage her to stop. The next day she cannot wait to paint again. She is so
motivated that it is difficult to get her to slow down.
